7/5/10
I awoke early, as usual, and one of the women (who I believe s a pastor's wife) brought me coffee and bread.
After our morning devotional on "A Baby's Hug, which was very moving for me, we had breakfast, we loaded the van with VBS supplies and the eye clinic materials and went to La Carpio, a very poor area near San Jose, filled with Nicaraguan refugees.
On our way through Heredia, one of the bins fell off of the van, so we had to stop and re-secure it. On our way, I read and understood most of the street signs and billboards. We stopped to put gas in the smaller trucks, then made our way to La Carpio. Once we entered the refugee area, we had a flat tire on the van! t was repaired quickly and we traveled less than a block to the church.
The people were lined up outside the church and we set up for the eye clinic as quickly as we could. I was overwhelmed by the severe poverty of the people in La Carpio in contrast to the kindness of the people we served. We had the opportunity to serve 51 people and give out 31 pair of glasses!
At lunch, served at the feeding center across the street where the adults and youth held VBS, we had beans, rice and pasta. The youth resumed VBS, where they led the children in songs, games, coloring, crafts, and skits. We continued the eye clinic until 3 p.m. (CR time) and headed home.
We played a game of hearts, ate dinner, played "65" again and then retired to bed.
