Costa Rica Mission Trip, Day Seven

7/6/10

I again awoke early, as usual, washed my face and hair, and went to the dining area to write in my journal.

Today is day two of the eye clinic and I expect we will see more people today, although 60 is probably a good guess. Tomorrow we will zipline through the jungle (canopy tour), shop in the main town, and finish with a nice dinner at a steak house.

I have to say that I have enjoyed Costa Rica emmensly and I am torn between being here and returning home.

Most of those who cam eot the eye clinic today did not need prescription glasses, only hats and sunglasses. Thankfully we remembered the Spanish Bibles and were able to distribute these as well. VBS, across the street, has 66 children and the youth and adult volunteers had their hands full!

In the middle of the day, a truck came down the street, spraying for mosquitos. We finished around 3 p.m. (CR time) and begane to pack up our materials. Rain was coming, so we had to rush a bit. Butch made sure the glasses were packewd in plastic, in case they got wet, which they did on the way home in a large downpour.

While all of this was happening, a "lookout" from a group of known bandits in the area was observing the activities of the "gringos". We kept everyone inside the church, to be safe, until the glasses were ready. We then loaded our equipment and supplies, covered them with a tarp, got on the bus, and left La Carpio.

Soon we were back at the ranch and had supper, followed by our reflection time, and another game of hearts and "65", which we had subsequently named "La Merta de Pollo". Silly, I admit.

Upon early reflection, this has been a great, unforgetable trip. I have enjoyed the team, the work, the food, and the play. Ultimately, it has been the knowledge of having made a difference in the lives of the people here thatwill cherish most.
